check in/out function failed on cancel button

Hello,

I have a problem with user managing..
Every time a user click on an item in the main menu for editing and does cancel instead of click on "save", this item is still checked_out but without showing name of this user ...so that no one else can edit this item further.
The one who has edited this item and cancelled (guess who it was) have to save it before go back (even no thing was edited).
So the cancel-button is unuseful because the check in function failed on this part??

Is there a solution of this problem? I'm happy about every answer.
